The district-wide String Fling Concert will be held in the Stevenson High School gymnasium on Wednesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. Over 400 Livonia Public School string students grades 6-12 will perform in this concert. The combined high school string orchestra will have a rehearsal on March 29 in the Stevenson gymnasium from 4-5:45 p.m. Mrs. Lenhart (Franklin HS) and Mr. Rais (Churchill HS) will rehearse the pieces to be performed by the mass high school orchestra for the String Fling concert. This is an outstanding opportunity for our students to work with professional string specialists and will be the only time all 3 high schools will rehearse together before the concert. High school musicians need to be in the gym, in their seat, tuned, and ready to rehearse at 4 p.m. Following the rehearsal, we will provide pizza and pop for the high school string students in the South Cafeteria. Individuals need to turn in $1 prior to Wednesday to help cover the cost of the pizza. Orchestra members will need to change into concert dress by 6:30p and be in their seats for the concert by 6:45p. We hope family and friends join us for an evening of fabulous string music.
We will need student help setting up the gym after school Wednesday. If you are available please let Mrs. Wickman know and plan to help from 2:30-3:30p. In addition, we need several band students to help guide our visiting musicians and their families and pass out programs the evening of String Fling. If you are available please let Mrs. Wickman know and plan to help from 5:45p-7:15p.
WIND ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS 2017-18
Individuals who are interested in performing in the Wind Ensemble next year must audition for admittance. Even if you are in Wind Ensemble this year, you must reaudition for the 2017-18 school year. Wind Ensemble auditions will be held in band classes (in mid-April). Students will sign up for an audition during their regular class time and must be present on the scheduled date. Adjudicators are brought in for these auditions and they are difficult if not impossible to fairly make up if a student is absent. Individuals will be expected to perform the prepared etude, a 2-octave major scale of their choice, full range chromatic scale, and sight-read. All audition expectations can be found in the link below. I encourage Wind Ensemble members who would like to continue to perform in the ensemble and all Symphony Band students to audition. Auditions are open to all students who play a concert band instrument. You won’t know if you don’t try!
CALLING ALL SENIORS!
It’s that time of year again. I will be working on the awards banquet slideshow over spring break and need your assistance by emailing a childhood and senior picture to email@example.com for the awards banquet. Remember, if you do not get to the pictures first, mom or dad may pick an embarrassing photo for you! If you do not have the ability to scan, bring the original in a clearly marked envelope with your name so pictures can be returned to you. I would like to keep a hard copy of your senior picture.
I am also looking for any pictures from the 2016-17 band and orchestra concerts, marching band camp, football games, Solo and Ensemble, competitions, etc. for the awards ceremony on May 19. Please send any photos you can share to Mrs. Wickman on a CD or as email attachments by April 9. The more photos I receive, the better chance I have to represent all the students throughout the year. We hope you will consider sharing your memories with us.
Over the past couple weeks there have been some changes in the music calendar to which I would like to bring your attention.
- The Spring Orchestra Concert has been moved to Tuesday, May 23 at 7p. The concert will still be held at Franklin HS. The concert will feature the Stevenson and Franklin HS orchestras.
- Drum major auditions have been moved to Wednesday, May 3 at 3p to allow students in 7th hour full participation in the auditions.
- Section leader auditions on Monday, June 5 have been moved to 3:30p to allow students in 7th hour full participation in the auditions.
All classes have now registered for SmartMusic and should be practicing their scales for assessment. Below are the requirements for each class for the remainder of marking period 3.
Students will have assigned time during class to complete assessments on the 2 school devices. If an individual would like more time on a device, they can check a device out before or after school or during their lunch for use in a practice room. The time students are assigned during class are to complete the assessments, NOT practice. Therefore, individuals need to practice music sections and scales at home to make the best use of their assessment time. Individuals who may be interested in purchasing a Smart Music subscription to use on a home computer or device can find information here. This would allow individuals to submit tests from home and practice solo, band, and orchestra literature at home with accompaniments. A home subscription is NOT a requirement, but provides many practice benefits to students.
