Mr. Turner and Mrs. Wickman are in the process of planning our next Music Department trip for spring break 2018. We will hold a meeting Monday, May 1 in the instrumental music room to share dates, location, and details. All interested music students (current grade 9, 10, 11) and parents should plan to attend the meeting.
ASSISTANT DRUM MAJOR AUDTIONS
Auditions will be held Wednesday, May 3 from 3-6 p.m. in the instrumental music room. Sophomores who have marched in the marching band for 2 years are eligible for Assistant Drum Major. Individuals must complete and turn in to Mrs. Wickman an essay and resume by Friday, April 28 at 7:30 a.m. to be considered for continuation on to the audition May 3. Qualifications and audition requirements are available on the music website at:
ASSISTANT DRUM MAJOR
From the essays/resumes submitted on April 28, 6-8 students will be invited to audition on May 3. Individuals who move on to the audition must conduct the National Anthem and fight song, demonstrate proper marching technique, demonstrate voice commands, teach a non-marching band member a specific marching fundamental, and complete an interview. I encourage all sophomore 2nd year members to consider applying. You will never know your potential if you do not try! We need marching band members from 2:45-3:30 p.m. the day of auditions to play SSB and fight song. See Sam Gibbs or Olivia Muench to sign-up to participate in the conducting band.
Sam Gibbs will be holding drum major prep sessions April 25, 26 and 28 before drum major auditions on May 3. Individuals interested in auditioning for assistant drum major should consider attending to learn conducting patterns and practice calling commands.

COLOR GUARD CLINICS
Color Guard tryouts for the 2017 Marching Band will be held on May 20 at Stevenson High School. To prepare for tryouts, guard leadership will be running clinics on Tuesdays after school. This week the clinic will be held at Holmes MS at 3p for incoming freshmen. Starting Tuesday, May 2, clinics will be held at Stevenson from 3:30-4:30p. Be sure to talk to friends who may have dance background or have expressed an interest in color guard. We would love to see a great turn out for tryouts. The clinics are a great way to get experience and knowledge before the auditions on May 20.
CALLING ALL SENIORS! Thank you to all who have emailed your childhood and senior pictures. If you have not gotten them in yet, please email your childhood and senior picture to email@example.com ASAP. If you do not have the ability to scan, bring the original in a clearly marked envelope with your name so pictures can be returned to you. I would like to keep a hard copy of your senior picture.
Over the past couple weeks there have been some changes in the music calendar to which I would like to bring your attention.
- The Spring Orchestra Concert has been moved to Tuesday, May 23 at 7p. The concert will still be held at Franklin HS. The concert will feature the Stevenson and Franklin HS orchestras.
- Drum major auditions have been moved to Wednesday, May 3 at 3p to allow students in 7th hour full participation in the auditions.
- Section leader auditions on Monday, June 5 have been moved to 3:30p to allow students in 7th hour full participation in the auditions.
All classes have now registered for SmartMusic and should be practicing their scales and music selections for assessment. Below are the requirements for each class for the remainder of marking period 3.
Students will have assigned time during class to complete assessments on the 3 school devices. If an individual would like more time on a device, they can check a device out before or after school or during their lunch for use in a practice room. The time students are assigned during class are to complete the assessments, NOT practice. Therefore, individuals need to practice music sections and scales at home to make the best use of their assessment time. Individuals who may be interested in purchasing a Smart Music subscription to use on a home computer or device can find information here. This would allow individuals to submit tests from home and practice solo, band, and orchestra literature at home with accompaniments. A home subscription is NOT a requirement, but provides many practice benefits to students.
