STATE SOLO & ENSEMBLE - Saturday, March 17 at South Lyon HS
The State Solo and Ensemble schedule can be found HERE and has been posted on the music website (shsmusic.org). If you find you have a conflict with your time that CANNOT be resolved, please let me know as soon as possible. MSBOA will NOT change a time because you do not like to perform early, or your accompanist has several events. Unless there is an unavoidable conflict, your time will not be changed. If you know you will NOT be participating in State S/E let me know so I can "scratch" your event and MSBOA can put someone else in your time slot.
Students in grades 10-12 who registered to perform a solo at State Solo & Ensemble are required to perform a proficiency, which includes scales and sight-reading in addition to the prepared solo. Please read the proficiency information in the link below to be sure you are preparing the correct scale proficiencies. All scales must be performed in the “in tempo” rhythm pattern we use in class. The judge will specify tongued or slurred before you play each scale so be sure you can perform scales with both articulations. Be sure you are preparing the melodic form of minor.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to be practicing your scales and sight reading daily! Individuals who play transposing instruments (i.e. clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, horn, etc.), the scales indicated for proficiency are listed in your key. If the scale is G2, the scale you perform will start on your G (do not transpose!). If you are looking for a way to practice sight reading, a good resource is https://www.sightreadingfactory.com. You can generate exercises at varying levels, keys, and time signatures. Record yourself and listen back to evaluate your performance accuracy. The only way to improve your sight-reading skills is to practice sight-reading regularly. In the Proficiency Requirement document below, you will find scale requirements and all extra requirements for piano and percussion. Proficiencies are for SOLOS grades 10-12.
BE SURE TO READ THE SOLO & ENSEMBLE INFORMATION PAMPHLET COMPLETELY. This will help you abide by MSBOA’s rules and assist you in having a positive experience.
REMINDER - Percussion, string bass, and large instrument musicians:
You are responsible for the transportation of your instrument to and from South Lyon HS. South Lyon will NOT provide any instruments or mallets at State Solo and Ensemble. Large instruments must be picked-up from Stevenson by 3:00p on Friday.
Events that do not abide by the MSBOA rules and regulations will be disqualified and will not receive a rating or a medal.
WIND ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS 2018-19 – Dates TBA
Individuals who are interested in performing in the Wind Ensemble next year must audition for admittance. Wind Ensemble auditions will be held in band classes (in late March or mid-April). Students will sign up for an audition during their regular class time and must be present on the scheduled date. Adjudicators are brought in for these auditions and they are difficult if not impossible to fairly make up if a student is absent. Individuals will be expected to perform the prepared etude, a 2-octave major scale of their choice, a 2-octave melodic minor scale of their choice, a full range chromatic scale, and sight-read. All audition expectations can be found in the link below. I encourage Wind Ensemble members who would like to continue to perform in the ensemble and all Symphony Band students to audition. Auditions are open to all students who play a concert band instrument. You won’t know if you don’t try!
