All classes have now registered for SmartMusic and should be practicing their scales for assessment. Below are the requirements for each class for the remainder of marking period 3.
Students will have assigned time during class to complete assessments on the 2 school devices. If an individual would like more time on a device, they can check a device out before or after school or during their lunch for use in a practice room. The time students are assigned during class are to complete the assessments, NOT practice. Therefore, individuals need to practice music sections and scales at home to make the best use of their assessment time. Individuals who may be interested in purchasing a Smart Music subscription to use on a home computer or device can find information here. This would allow individuals to submit tests from home and practice solo, band, and orchestra literature at home with accompaniments. A home subscription is NOT a requirement, but provides many practice benefits to students.

HOLMES MS OPEN HOUSE
The Holmes MS incoming 7th grade Open House is Thursday, March 16. Mrs. Kilgore is looking for Stevenson chamber ensembles to perform at the Open House. There will be 2 sessions from 6-6:35p and 7:30-8:15p. Parents and students will tour the building during the two sessions to see the building and learn about the many offerings available in middle school. This is a great opportunity for ensembles participating in Solo & Ensemble Saturday to rehearse in preparation their performances. Please let me know if you are interested and/or available to perform Thursday night.
STATE SOLO & ENSEMBLE
Saturday, March 18 at South Lyon HS
The State Solo and Ensemble schedule is posted on the music website. Below is a link for your convenience. If you find you have a conflict with your time that CANNOT be resolved, please let me know as soon as possible. MSBOA will NOT change a time because you do not like to perform early or your accompanist has several events. Unless there is an unavoidable conflict, your time will not be changed. If you know you will NOT be participating in State S/E let me know so I can "scratch" your event and MSBOA can put someone else in your time slot.
Students in grades 10-12 who registered to perform a solo at State Solo & Ensemble are required to perform a proficiency, which includes scales and sight-reading in addition to the prepared solo. Please read the proficiency information in the link below to be sure you are preparing the correct scale proficiencies. All scales must be performed in the “in tempo” rhythm pattern we use in class. The judge will specify tongued or slurred before you play each scale so be sure you can perform scales with both articulations. Be sure you are preparing the melodic form of minor.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to be practicing your scales daily! Individuals who play transposing instruments (i.e. clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, horn, etc.), the scales indicated for proficiency are listed in your key. If the scale is G2, the scale you perform will start on your G (do not transpose!). In the Proficiency Requirement document, you will find scale requirements and all extra requirements for piano and percussion. Proficiencies are for SOLOS grades 10-12.
BE SURE TO READ THE SOLO & ENSEMBLE INFORMATION PAMPHLET COMPLETELY. This will help you abide by MSBOA’s rules and assist you in having a positive experience.
REMINDER - Percussion, string bass, and large instrument musicians:
You are responsible for the transportation of your instrument to and from South Lyon HS. South Lyon will NOT provide any instruments or mallets at State Solo and Ensemble. Large instruments must be picked-up from Stevenson by 3:00p on Friday.
Events that do not abide by the MSBOA rules and regulations will be disqualified and will not receive a rating or a medal.
MUSICAL: Annie – Tech and Musical Week: March 20-25
The Stevenson MUSICAL Annie will be presented to the public March 23, 24, and 25 in the Stevenson auditorium. To prepare for the performances the actors, musicians, and stage crew will have dress rehearsals March 20-22 from 2:45p until approximately 9p.
The cast and pit orchestra for Annie will present assemblies Wednesday, March 22 during hours 3, 5, and 6. Pit members will be school businessed for the assemblies. Pit orchestra dress for musical performances is all black. Orchestra call-time for the evening performances will be 6:15p Thursday and 6:30p Friday and Saturday. We hope friends and family will come out to support our musicians, actors, and behind the scenes crew in all the hard work they have dedicated to bringing this musical gem to life.

WIND ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS 2017-18
Individuals who are interested in performing in the Wind Ensemble next year must audition for admittance. Wind Ensemble auditions will be held in band classes (in mid-April). Students will sign up for an audition during their regular class time and must be present on the scheduled date. Adjudicators are brought in for these auditions and they are difficult if not impossible to fairly make up if a student is absent. Individuals will be expected to perform the prepared etude, a 2-octave major scale of their choice, full range chromatic scale, and sight-read. All audition expectations can be found in the link below. I encourage Wind Ensemble members who would like to continue to perform in the ensemble and all Symphony Band students to audition. Auditions are open to all students who play a concert band instrument. You won’t know if you don’t try!
